July Edition, 2018 Banner for eNewsletter

Hi there,

We're over halfway through 2018 already! How time flies. Parliament will sit again on the 21st of August, after Estimate Hearings (which are ongoing) are finished.

One of the most important things a Member of Parliament does is stand up for consumers that are being dealt a bad hand. Many customers of Australian 4WD Hire have contacted me about the alleged unfair practices of that company. That is why I have spoken in the media and in Parliament about Australian 4WD Hire, and the people who've had their dream holiday turned upside down. You can see this page on my website which has all of the recent stories. It is where I'll add future items as they come to hand.

On a lighter note, if you follow me on Facebook you would already know that during the school holidays, I took my family on a road trip to central Australia. It was a priceless experience we'll always cherish. I'd highly recommend that you plan a road trip. We travelled through the Simpson Desert, but there are some much easier trips that are just as good!

Queensland's Parliament House is turning 150 years old and I'd like to invite you to a special celebration on Saturday 11th of August. There'll be a behind-the-scenes tour of Parliament House (which includes the exclusive areas that are not usually open to the public), plenty of entertainment and activities for the kids. All the details are in the events section of this e-newsletter.

Round 1 of my Clayfield Community Grants was successful. I received an overwhelming amount of applications but there could only be 5 recipients. It was a tough decision. I want to congratulate the recipients once again; Probus Club of Ascot, Miss World entrant Aliandra Calabrese, Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School, WWILD & Bayview Tce Kindy. If you were unsuccessful in the previous round or missed the deadline, don’t be disheartened because you can always apply in the next round, which is open now! You can apply online and find more information here. Good luck for Round 2!

Best wishes,

Tim Nicholls MP

The Simpson Desert

Over the School Holidays I was fortunate enough to spend some time out in the Red Centre. It was a long drive on some long dusty roads, but it's the only way to go if you want a good look at the amazing environment. Bit of a change in scenery compared to Clayfield, and some much colder nights! You can see a few more snaps from the trip by clicking the link below.

Celebrating Daphne Rusell's 100th Birthday

Last week, I was delighted to attend Daphne Russell's milestone birthday celebration. Can you believe that this gorgeous lady turned 100?! Daph is the second centenarian living at Carinity Clifford House aged care. Daph certainly received plenty of love and attention from family and friends. Even Daph's favourite NRL player, Johnathan Thurston congratulated her by gifting her a signed Cowboy's jersey. Check out Daph's facebook page for more photos.

National Karate Academies - Ascot

The National Karate Academies in Ascot is a local club teaching self defence to all ages. I got to see the training first hand when Dai Sempai Hamish James (main instructor) reached out a few weeks ago to invite me to Monday night's session. I wasn't dressed for it but still got some much needed exercise in with the junior squad. Hamish teaches his students to protect themselves while creating a culture of respect and self-discipline. If you're interested in joining the National Karate Academies, the first class is free! Come and join on Monday nights at St Margaret's Philip Harris Sports Centre, Lapraik St, Ascot. Juniors class starts at 6pm and Seniors class (over 13 year olds) start at 7pm. For more information, please contact Dai Sempai Hamish James on 0439 717 483.

Aliandra Calabrese for Variety-the Children's Charity of QLD

I was happy to award one of my Clayfield Community Grants to Aliandra Calabrese, a national finalist in the Miss World Australia competition, who is raising money for Variety Children's Charity. She's doing some good deeds in our local community, so if you can spare some money, donating to Aliandra's initiative will support Variety give life-changing help to children who are sick or disadvantaged. She has raised almost $12,000 and you can help her reach her $15,000 target by donating here. Wishing Aliandra the best of luck in her next competition in August at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast.

Probus Club of Ascot

I joined members of The Probus Club of Ascot for a lovely morning tea before presenting Club President Geoff with $200 from my Clayfield Community Grants Program. This grant helped purchase their new lectern. The Probus Club of Ascot makes a valuable contribution to our local community, and I'm always happy to support them in any way that I can.

Clayfield C&K Kindy

I was pleased to present Bayview Tce C&K Clayfield Pre-Prep with $200, which will go towards buying audio-books that can be used across their 4 classes. C&K Pre-Prep applied for the grant because they found that audio books help children engage better during story time. I got to visit them last week to present the youngsters with a big blue cheque and certificate. I want to congratulate the teachers and P&C for the dedicated work they are doing here for our little future leaders.

Our Lady Help of Christians School

Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Primary School in Hendra received a $200 Clayfield Community Grant which will go towards purchasing sports equipment. I was invited to their Friday morning assembly to present the big cheque and meet the students and parents. OLHC is a wonderful small school delivering big results!

Jodie Moore - State of Origin Jersey Winner

Even though it was a bit late, it was still great to see Jodie, the winner of my "Best thing about QLD" competition. Jodie reckons that “Queensland has been and always will be one big community who looks out for their own and others when help is needed. Our fighting spirit keeps us strong.” Who could disagree with that? Hope you (more likely your sons) enjoy the jersey Jodie, and thanks to everyone who entered the competition!
